Rheumatoid Arthritis Is chronic Inflammation
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints and the tissue around the joints and often progresses into other organs of the body as well.
Here is a list of not so commonly talked about problems of rheumatoid arthritis you need to be aware of:
1. Rheumatoid Arthritis inflammation can get into the glands of the eyes and mouth causing Sjogren's syndrome.
2. Rheumatoid inflammation can get into the lining of the lung (pleuritis) which causes chest pain when you breathe deeply or cough. The lung tissue itself can sometimes get nodules of inflammation (rheumatoid nodules) within the lungs.
3. RA can cause the tissue surrounding the heart to become inflamed, called pericarditis, and may cause chest pain that typically changes in intensity with change of position, such as lying down or leaning forward.
4. Rheumatoid Arthritis can reduce the number of red blood cells, which causes anemia, as well as white blood cells which is associated with an enlarged spleen, called Felty's syndrome. This is not good for your health and makes you more susceptible to infection other illnesses and diseases.
5. Firm lumps under the skin (rheumatoid nodules) can occur around the elbows and fingers where there is frequent pressure.
6. One of the most rare, yet most serious complications with RA is blood vessel inflammation vasculitis. Vasculitis can interfere with the blood supply to body tissues and can lead to tissue death. This is most often first seen as small black areas around the base of the toe nails or fingernails.
7. Leg ulcers are another complication of vasculitis.
8. Vasculitis usually only occurs in long term rheumatoid arthritis sufferers.
While rheumatoid arthritis, can last for years and is a chronic illness. But you may experience long periods without symptoms. Typically, however, rheumatoid arthritis is a progressive illness that has the potential to cause joint destruction and functional disability.
Environmental factors also seem to play a role in causing rheumatoid arthritis. It is suspected that certain infections or factors in the environment might trigger the immune system to attack the body's own tissues, resulting in the inflammation of these various other organs of the body.
Is there hope? YES.
